Stuck on Fingering?

Get out your pencil (NOT PEN) – because you will probably make many changes as you go. There is nothing wrong with writing on your music – sometimes in BIG NUMBERS!!! I have a student that even uses highlighter on the key signature notes (#’s & b’s)!

Scribble away – NOW – HOW do you figure out which fingering!

Start with these general rules:

  1. Establish the Key – and know your scale fingering – where do you go under and over
  2. For extended runs – try to match scale fingering – also a quick 1-2-under 1-2 – fingering can get you out of trouble!
  3. Within a phrase – look for the lowest note (for thumb) and highest note (for 5th)
  4. Watch out for transitions between phrases – adjust fingering in advance
  5. Don’t forget – you can change the finger while you hold the note
  6. You can SQUEEZE your fingering – like 1 of F – the 4 on G – for a run going down or like 3 on G then 1 on F – so you can go over to 3 on E
  7. Avoid 5th finger on black notes and try to avoid thumb on black note
  8. Don’t forget – you can change fingers on repeated notes – to set yourself up for next phrase

I have started with a simple tune – but it was giving even me – headaches – in the fingering department – so click the link and see HOW AND WHY I set up the fingering……
